MATCH AT GISBORNE.
GOOD DISPLAY BY M'MAHON, (By Telegraph—Prwe Aejoolallon.i Glsborno, February 20. Tho weather was line, and tho wicket good for tho Australian match with Poverty Bay. About 2000 spectators witnessed tho game. Kohlenberg and Gibson took strike for Poverty Bay, facing the bowling of Waddy and Armstrong; Kahlen'oerg off-drove Waddy'* third ball for three, and off Armstrong's second ball he notched a boundary. He looked confident, but after hitting Waddy to squareleg for two he attompted a drive, and was caught in tho long field. "Gartshoro filled tho breach, and after four maidens had been bowled lie got Armstrong to leg for two, and bagged another couple, lu the same over, a few moments later, lie pushed ono into the hands of Waddy at slip. M'Mahon (captain) followed, and got his first,ball from Armstrong to leg for three. At the luncheon adjournment tho score stood 2—4—y3.. Waddy resumed the attack after tho interval, and the last ball of the over was placed past cover to tho boundary. M'Mahon then earned applause for a splendid square-cut past point to the boundary. With the score at 45 Mailey took the ball from Waddy, and, in his first over, M'Mahon got him twice through the slips for two .and three respectively. The half-century was hoisted after 50 minutes' play, but a change was at hand, for, with the score at 54, Mailey got past Gibson's defence. He had been in an hour for 12
Hallamore followed and Mailoy broko his wicket with tho second ball. Moore filled the breach, but was soon bowled by Armstrong. Guthrie came next, and got Armstrong's first ball nicely to tho leg boundary. At 62 Noble took the ball from Mailey .'and, the home captain at onco bagged a four to the leg boundary. All this time M'Mahon was playing bright crickot, although tho scoring was somewhat slow. At 88 Guthrio fell to Noblo and J. Gibson filled the gap. Each batsman got Armstrong to tho leg boundary, 10 coming from that over, and presently M'Mahon hoisted the century with a couple off Noblo after 90 minutes' play. M'Mahon was then 49. At tho tea adjournment tho score was 119. On resuming Armstrong went on i with. Mailey, and after some slow play Gibson was splendidly taken by Mailey at slip. . Harker ' joined M'Mahon, who was now playing beautiful cricket and the newcomer got Armstrong to leg for 4, but was not too confident, and eventually fell l.b.w. to tho Victorian in the next over. Scholium followed', but was bowled first ball. Jones was tho last man in, and the score then mounted to 150- at tho rate of a run a minute. 'At 155 the innings camo to an end, Jones being caugh. M'Mahon had played a brilliant innings for 87, scoring freely all round the wicket. Ho never gave tho semblance of a chance and shaped with ; great confidence. He received a great ovation at tho close of tho innings. His score included nine fourers, five threes, and nine twos.
Tho Australians opened with Lavor and M'Gregor to the bowling of Kahlenberg and Scholium. Runs camo freely, but at 5.35 bad light stopped play with the score of 20. ■ Poverty Bay.
