As there was a strong wind blowing and- tho flames reached across tho street, it was a closo.call for tho shops opposite. As it-was tbe premises of Messrs. Webloy and Co.'s adjoining Mr. Hickling's were scorched,' but owing to the Efforts of tho fire brigade, under Superintendent Lepper/the fire was confined to the building where it originated.' Mr. A Hickling was absent at 'the timo and tho origin of the fire is unknown. - Tho building, which was owned by Wobley and Co., was insured in. the Allianco Office for £200, but the stock and furniture were only- covered by an insurance of £150 in the• State Office. Mr. Hickling estimates bis loss (it about £400. In connection with this outbreak a letter of thanks was recoiv ed yesterday by Superintendent Lcpper (of the Petono Fire- Brigade) from Mr. J, R. Caroy (of Wobley and Co.) for the manner in'which' the brigade worked and saved the adjoining property. A 1 cheque for £5 was enclosed, with a suggestion that £2 be nllotted to tho, social function fund, and £3 to go to . requirements of the men's social room.
