The Very llev> Stephen, Dean of Melbourne, has been elected Anglican Bishop of Tasmania, in succession to Dr.' Mercer, who resigned/ Dwn Stephen is. an Australian, born and bred, and, is a fine example of a colonial, who by exceptional ability and force of character, has risen to one of the highest positibns in the Church. He' is' a brilliant scholar, ati eanuest and thoughtful preacher, an interesting lecturer and platform, speaker, ;anil a.jiujin deep interest in modern 'social problefes. He is 51 years of age, and. is described as a High Churchman of a broad and libera! modern 9 f JW.depifeiiKling and sympathising with the views of Churchmen * of other sclioglb ..of thought. He . was born at Geelc-ng, in. Victoria, in IS.G3. He was educated at'the Church of-. BfigtaJ* Grammar School at Geelong, and later on at Trinity College, University of Mri,bourne. _ Ho took the M,A. degree in 1881, being an Exhibitioner in. National Science and Scholar in Hi-story and Political Economy (First Qass). He secured the Bromby prizes in Biblical Greek in 1882,.-and in Hebrew in.lBS9, and was also awarded tho Cobden Club iledai. Tha University showed its recognition o.f iiis exceptional abilities by making him Examiner in History and Political Economy, and ho was also a University Extension Lecturer. . He was ordained "in 1883. In 188.9 ho became Vicar of Balwyn awl Canterbury, and five years later he was appointed Vicar of St. Andrew's, Brighton. In 1:899 ho wont back: la Trinity College, University of Melbourne as Chaplain and Sttb-Warden. In 190-1 tho Bishop of Melbourne appointed him Diocesan Chaplain, and he wfts also made Vicar of Holy Trinity, Balaclava, in 1902 he became a fellow of tho Australian Coolie.?© of Theology and in 1908 he delivered the Moorhouso .Lectures (founded to commemorate the Melbourne Episcopate of Bishop Sloorhouse, who afterwards became Bishop of Manchester), his subject being "Democracy and Character." Ho was annointed Canon of St, Pawl's Cathedral, Melbourne, in 1903, and in 1010 he was appointed to succeed 1 Dr. Vanes rs Dean of Mel bourne. Dean Stephen one of the foremost of the Australasian, representatives at the Pan-Anglican Congress held in London, in 190 S.
