In connection with tho appointment of Mr. Thornton, an American, as General Manager of the Great Eastern Railway, Lord Claud Hamilton, the chairman of directors, says that one reason for tho appointment was Mr. Thornton's knowledge of electrical operation, arid because it was suggested that a change of system should bo confided to a man bringing new ideas.
