Tho Borough Council has decided in favour q1- loans aggregating £184,760, ana apportioned as follow:—Gasworks, . £100,Ul)0; trams, £55,000; tepid baths; i'doOO; conveniences in Square, £1250; sewerage, roads, etc., £25,000. The council also decided to take the gasworks loan poll first, on a date about March 18, the other polls to be taken aiterwards. Owing to a difficulty in obtaining sister nurses, the Palmorston Hospital Board decided on Thursday to raiso tho sisters' salaries £10 per annum. Tho chairman stated that there were five sisters affected. To fill certain vacancies tb-ey had advertised without getting a single- application. The increase- brings the salaries up to the scale obtaining in Other hospitals. Mr. D. Howie, a member of the . board' was grantel six months' leave of absence on, account of illness. • • • . Fourteen _ Territorials were convicted in tho Magistrate's Court this morning on charges under the Defenco Act. The magistrate addressed the defaulters in kindly terms, urging them to attend . their drill and so avoid proceedings being taken against them. One lad who told his officers to "go and have a roll" was fined 20s. and os. costs. Bertie Savage was charged at the Magistrate's - Court with supplying hqucr to a Native woman named I'ikihuia Manihcra. The evidence- showed that the defendant purchased two or , three dozen bottles ot beer, and took it to t'he -Itouso of the Native, where- he was lodging. The Native, without his authority, had taken the liqnor and consumed a portion of it. Hi." Worship : 'held that it had not been proved that the liquor had boon supplied to tho woman by defendant. A case of interest to the mercantile community was heard in the Magistrate's Court on Thursday, when C. A. Tabutean claimed from William M'Keft* zio a sum of £40, alleged to bo duo on a promissory-note. The evidence showed that for various reasons tho'promishad not been presented for payment on the duo date. The magis* trate upheld a contention by counsel that under the Bills of Exchange Act there was no recourse against the maker of a promissory-note unless tho document was presented on the date and at the place named in its body. He therefore nonsuited tho plaintiff, with costs. A number of members of the JJas-ter-ti>n Gun Club intend competing at tho Raster meeting of tire Auckland Gun Club'.
