MARTON SHOW.
ITS FEATURES &'HONOURS. (By Toleffraph.-Spccial Correspondent.) Palmerston, February 11. Delightful weather attracted a big and picturesque crowd to tho Marton racecourse to-day for the Marton A. and P. Association's . fcecond annual show, which was opened by the Earl of Liverpool. The Marton Association lias tho unusual distinction of having mado a profit on the first show, and to-day's exchequer is expected to preserve.-that'-record. The keenest part of the show was the competitions, where fields <f twenty and over were common, local horsemen striving against such old winners as L. H. Collmson and 11. Hassais. There was good company also in the ladies' hacks, best-paced hacks, and light-weight hacks, where the fields .averaged 20., The ponies also made a brave show.,' The honours were well scattered in thoroughbreds, and the entries were 'airly numerous. The harness horses were a particularly fine lot, and there was strong contest among draughts, regarding which Mr. James Grant, the judge, declared the dry mare class a particularly good team. Next in quality came the geldings, which were classed as good, and mares with foals were fairly good. The young stock were only medium. . The judge, speaking as one who takes annual shipments to Australia, does not consider that anything in • tho section supports tho fear that Australia is depleting us of good breeding stock, though many horses are goiiig that we call ill spare. Ho thinks that tho breeding stock remains finally un-, diminished. The judge was highly pleased with tho fat sheep and lambs. Jersey cattlo was the strongest feature of that section, indicating tho district's strong loaning in that direction. Miss Grace Lane, with her only entry Duchess, won the cow championship, and T. M'Kenzio. a more extensive exhibitor, that for bull. Holsteins wore very weak, only three classes being filled, while Ayrshires were quite unrepresented. In Shorthorns, thcro were only two competitors, and tho Hereford classes wore empty. In the butter-fat ('lass there were only two entires, which were below the required minimum. 'Hie dairy classes worn well filled, but at 'his late stage in tho season their milking qualities were not conspicuous. The only sheep classes unpalronised were Kimlish Lcicesters. Liucolns showed siens of a recent revival, and
Roninoys wero also prominent. Both these,-breeds'figured well''in- the farmers' classes. -"• .'•■'•' The dog entries'.were" nearly doubled. Most of-them wore.'sheep dogs, which numbered 23, ami all were local, dogs except -R. 13. 'Oliver's'. Irish terrier Kim, and.W. J." Prentice's fox terrier front Palmerston. A'egetablCs,. fruit, butter,, and hcrnie industries were small but interesting sections' of notable merit. Among tbo private exhibits an outstanding feature was the Wellington; Meat Export Gompany'.s'display of its' main and subsidi-' ary products, a.tent near the, industrial exhibits, and showed samples : of. wool in : of tieatment alongside ;other "ijurcs such as'llama wool; ailk and ramie fibre, and also canned meats.. Particularly interesting to practical farmers w«s the company's six pounds of meat packed squaro for export. ,- These ar© never seen in retail shops-, but they are the kind that will figure in Army' contracts when New Zealand 'secures thorn. ■■■ One practical vein .which' poreniatesthe Marton character \vss shown in the sheaf-stacking contest. Tlie stack was represented by.a Structure resembling a glorified soccer goal,: and a wheat sheaf, which weighed 131b. clothed ill sacking, had its closest counterpart in a rag doll. There were 32 entries for the sovereign to tho mail, who could pitchfork the sheaf highest over the bar, and among these wcro three scratch men —F. Whalo and F. Jefferson, both of Marton* and Morrison, of Halcombe^—giving eighteen inches, They were followed by P. Whale n,.nd ltawhiti, of Marton., G, Stock, of Bulls, giving twelve inches. The winner was H. Belk, of Utiku, manager of Mr. George Marshall's farm, whose actual throw was 22Jft., representing, with the handicap, 24ft. There was a long struggle between G.' Stock and P. AVhalo in tho throw-off, and the rag doll was a very tattered lady before Stock finally qualified for second place. There were, the Usual guessing contests, and particularly keen Was that around tho lucky cake presented by the show caterers. £3 3s, 6d. was invested in this contest, and 172 people went to bed all probably believing they had won it, as the result was. .not known till late.
