As a counterblast to the patriotic demonstration by peasants,' thirty thousand Socialists demonstrated in front of the Government offices, demanding a diminution in armaments.. ; The Premier replied that Swedes would be compelled to make' great sacrifices for the defence of the country. A few days ago over thirty thousand peasants from all parts of the country marched in procession to the Royal . Cefrtle. Amd petitioned Kin.? Gnetavus ill favour of an immediate increase in the national armament, declaring the peasantry's readiness to make all necessary sacrifices. The King, in replying to the deputation, said he was determined to insist on an. early settlement to tho defence question. The fleet, he added, should be increased. There were scenes of great enthusiasm.
