Press, especially as to the ophaions and wishes of the late.Sir James Hector regarding the purposes of the local museum. For a correct statement of the views of Sir James Hector thereon, I. refer yoUr readers'to'his report to the Hon'.'Minister of Mines, dated Jmio 29, 1886, which appeared in the "Beport on the Mining Industry' of .Ne\V -Zealand," 1887; page 31, '"of'which the following is an.extract:— .""i-i:- ■ "The Colonial Museum, f although a public institution, is primarily intended as a necessary adjunct to tho Geological Survey Department, for without, the careful preservation of the specimens upon which such survey work is founded, no reliable basis can be obtained for the preparation of reports and maps. The additions' to the mu- " scum are therefore chiefly in the form of fossils and mineral spec!-. ■ mons." —1 am, etc., GEOLOGIST. Wellington, February. 9, 1914.
