The table of 387 representative Stock Exchange securities appearing in "The Bankers' Magazine" shows that during 1913 there has been- an-average drop in market value of 5.2 per cent. The decline ha 3 been of. a progressive character, andjuet- as December of the previous year provided the lowest point of .1912, so December supplies the lowwater mark of 1913. The total depreciation in 1912 was ecjual to £85,000,000, but that of. 1913 approximates to .-£186,000.000. A ■number of-factors,of.a political and economic character have been responsible. They Have been no • worse perhaps than those, in 1912. but' there was- a. greater, cumulative effect-of persisting influence.;. The potato market is still at-a standstill. the opening price not having been fixed. Farmers, are holdinc back from making sales, under the impression that so much damage has been done In -North Otago and South Canterbury by the bliirht.; It has to be remembered, however, that the. whole area affected will sturdy equal the. increase in acreage' in the crp.» in tho Dominion this season*
