* —■ —- Two'heavy shocks of earthcraake occurred here .on' Sunday morning, but luckily no damage was dono. Tho death occurred hero yesterday morning -of Mr. John Cbotes, youngest son of Mrs. J. Cootes, of .'Rangiura, aged 26 years. Deceased was'a fine athlete, being, ono of the leadtag players m the local football club. Mr. J. G. Stevens has "placed" several large areas of land during tlio past few days, the sales totalling nearly £12,000. Mr. J. G. Harkness has bought a farm on tho Fahiko Estate, whilo Messrs. Jonson, Spurring, and M'Donald, all of Pahiatuaj have bought adjacent sections. As a result of tho above sales it is probable that a school will bo built at Hautere. An accident occurred recently to Eleanor Marino, daughter of Mr. Marino, of Te Horo. The child was returning from a school picnic when a bottle of cordial oxploded, Bending a piece of glass into her eye. She was attended by Dr. Hardwick Smith (who happened to be in the district; and Dr. Hath' waite. They ordered her removal to "Wellington for special treatment;, Dr. Hardwick Smith and tho tter. W. A. Evans, of the Wellington Hospital Board, visited Otaki on Saturday, and inspected tho hospital, sanatorium, and grounds, etc.
