WAIRARAPA AUTOMOBILE ASSOCIATION.
UPKEEP OF RIMUTAKA ROAD. ■A mooting of tho committee of tlio Wairarapa Automobile Association was held at Mr. iU. lilgar's residonce, Fernside, on Thursday night, Mr. Elgar, chairman of tho executive, presiding. A letter was received from Mr. Una Torstonson one of tho handicappers in connection with the recent sports meeting, returning £1 Is. received as expenses, as a donation to the association. Mrs. H.' Plimmer (Wellington) wrote thanking tho association for the kindness shown to her lato husband on tho occasion, of his visit to Featherston, also for kindness towards herself.' Tho matter of securing a reduction in the freight on benzine was further considered, and it was decided to offer to co-operate with the Vacuum Oil Co., which has followed.the lead of the Wairarapa Association in the endeavour to induce the Railway Department to consider the recommendation. .It was resolved that tho Minister of Railwavs, Sir Walter Buchanan, and Mr. 6. R. Sykes, M.P.'s, and the General Manager of the New Zealand Railways be written to on the subject, also that kindred associations be asked to" support a. petition in the desired direction. ' Overtures were received from the New Zealand Motor Union as to the affiliation of tho Wairarapa Association, but it was decided- to ascertain the objects of -the union before taking definite action. The basis of levies upon affiliated bodies was objected, to as being, a tax on enterprising associations. ' It was deoided- to invito Mr. Keith Jackson, of Masterton, to address the executive at its next meeting oh tho proposal to establish benzol works in New Zealand. It is estimated that £20,000 would be required to capitalise the scheme. <; Tho first annual ball is to be held in Featherston on May 7. A programme committee, consisting' of tho chairman and Messrs., W. G. Miller ,md I. V. Wilson (secretary) was Eet up to draw up the fixtures for the balance of tho summer season. . Local bodies throughout J .ko AVairarapa are to bo invited to hold a conference in regard to the upkeep of the Rhnutaka Road, and the chairman and the secretary were deputed to reprosent the association at the proposed conference After the meeting the the executive, to tho number of 15, and press representatives were entertained at supper by Mr. Elgar. • •
