Hie legislation passed, by the Government during tho last session of Parliament in regard to workers' homes was referred- to during the City Council's discussion last 'evening regarding- the proposed erection - of - .municipal - dwellings for workers "in Auckland,
Tho Mayor (Mr, C. J. Parr) pointed out that under the' Act as amended it was possible for tlio council, in cases in which no special rate was proposed, to borrow money for tho purposo of assisting workers without going to the ratepayers. This power is given for the purposes, inter alia, of assisting workers by advancing money to theui to enable them to acquire sites for homes or t-a erect dwellings, the council is. also empowered to let them oil easy terms of repayment or to sell dwelling's to them on easy- terms of repayment. Mr. Hall Skoltoh, after perusing t%o amendments, remarked: "This is tho finest piece of legislation for tho worker ever brought clown." "'Bid Mr. Masses bring it down?" asked Mr. J. M. Metmie. "He'did," was Mr. Skelton's rcjoindor amidst laughter. llie Mayor said there was no doubt that the legislation was on right lines.
