Roar-Admiral Vreoland has confidentially conferred with tho House of Representatives Committee on JNaval Affairs. , It is reported that Admiral Vreoland urged on tho Committee tho absolute necessity for the United States keeping pace with tho Japanese shipbuilding programmes. Ho pointed out the comparative easo with winch Japan, could secure tho Philippines and Hawaii in tho event of the outbreak of war, and urged that a strong United States fleet ivas imperative. Ho considered Alaska safo from Japanese attack, giving reasons which tho Committee, ordored to be • suppressed in its report. Admiral Vreoland declared that if Japan over struck a blow it would bo" a swift and damaging one. Hβ doubted, however, whether tbo United States would win if war occurred. ■ He admitted that ho was unable to secure definite information as to tho actual building Srogrammo of Japan, but he knew that apan was spending every available sum on battleships and auxiliary craft. Tho Admiral thought if Japan once equalled the United States's "naval strength, tho latter country would be sure to rpoeive a demand for the abolition of tho antialien, law.'. . • ' ! ■ ■
