The Princess Theatre, ■ Hastings, was crowded in <jvery part when tho Hawke's Bay Amateur Boxing Association staged ji contest for a £50 purse between B. Ireland, of Waipawa, and W. Bartlett, of Cluistchurch. The contest went tho full 15 rounds, and was won by Irelandon points, after a vigorous and determined encounter. Ireland was announced as list, lib., and Bartlett-12st. In .the opening rounds Bartlett clearly eutboxed his opponent. Ho met Ireland's leads with quick rights and lefts that were continually landine.. They did not, however, damage the hardy Ireland, who kept pegging away, and when Bartlett's attack slackoticd ho commonced to even up tho pointß. In tho ,la.it three rounds Ireland proved distinctly the stronger, and occasionally ho got in some telling blows. In tho fourteenth round tho gong saved Bartlett, and in tho last it took all his ring craft to keep out of danger.' Tho contest. was cleanly fought, and the points of the pair at tho finish cannot havo been widely separated. Mr. Sampson, of AVellington, actcd as referee. As preliminaries to tho abovo several, amateur bouts were contested.' W.' Ireland (Waipawa), 95t.,. defeated A. Anderson (Christchureh), 9st. 71b.. and Avery (Hastings), Bst. 21b. beat Sullivan (Hastings), Bst. 21b., on points. D Collins (Hastings), lOst. 91b., defeated Beetham (Waipawa), 9st, 131b, Tho latter was Mjable to continue after the third round. . A Adair (Hastings), Bst. 121b., beat F.
