Mr. E. W. Burton, who has been,recently appointed a Stipendiary Magistrate, presided over a sitting of tlio Wellington Magistrate's. Court yesterday. Prior to tho business Mr. H. F. von Haast, speaking , on behalf , of the legal profession, • extended congratulations to Mr. Burton on his elevation to tho Magisterial Benjh, arid wished him every success in liis new sphere of work. The speaker also assured Mr. Burton of tho support and 00-operation of tho members of the.profession. Mr/Burton, in acknowledging the kindly expression of feeling by the Bar, humorously remarked that, after 33. years of practice, he would now liavo to learn that there are two sides to every case. Ho thanked the members of tho legal profession for their congratulations and assured them that with their co-opera-tion he would endeavour to do. his duty as it should bo done. Mr. Burton, was formerly a member of the legal firm of Messrs.. Burton and Hammond, of Auckland. , Ho will probably remain in Wellington about a fortnight, during which time he will assist in magisterial work. He will then take tip duty in tlio. district.
