CHURCHES IN INDIA.
The question of tho siatns of the Anglican Church in India was raised iu tho Yicc-regal Council at Simla on September 17 in a series of questions'by a native member. Iu replying. Sir' Harcourt Butler said that tho Government recognised their obligation to provide religions ministrations td Rritisli-born servants of tho Crown, and especially soldiers and their.families in India, and that there was an establishment of Anglican chaplains i'or this purpose, supplemented by a few Roman Catholic, Presbyterian,'iu?d Wesleyan chaplains where circumstances justified it. The proportion of churchmen to the total Christian population in India was as one to seven. Tho Government, he noted, had coiiifirmotl for Hindu and Mussulman worship a number of religious endowments, alienated for State 'revenues, which existed before British rulo.
