.VERY SUCCESSFUL GATHERING) BRILHAJiT WEATHER,. The Hoiwhruum Agricultural and Pastoral Association's eighth show was held on the rucccoiir.-o at Levin yesterday. ;'J'he weather was brilliant, .and tho at.'lendaiico large; Everything wont .off Satisfactorily. Tho exhibits of coinnet-, jug stock were numerically equal to last year's, and tho standard of quality was ,woll.maintained. As usual, the Wereroa State. I'mto exhibited some fin© stock. Thi.-v, year theV' showo dsoiiio beautiful iHolstein. and- Shorthorn cows, draught marcs, and Ryeland and Komney sheep. Tho Prime Minister, Hon. W. l'\ Masgey.; who. is Minister of Agriculture, was unable' to attend' the show, but. the Eon. ft. Heatoii Rhodes, who represented tho' ■Ministry, performed the opening cchjnony. Mr. Rhodes expressed his regret at the unavoidable absence of the Prime Minister, who, lie remarked, took a very ■ keen interest in tho welfare of. the farmers. Touching (in tho subject of the country's outlook, Mr. Kliodes said that every-, thins pointed to a succcssful season. Tho two previous years had shown satisfactoryincreases in the export trade, and ho understood- from Mr.' 'Massey that in this season, also, there would bo a very fair increase. Mr. Massey was doing his utmost for tho fanners, and recently lio had opened up tho Heathe'rlea Settlement, which was the means of bringing twentywx new settlers to the district. Mr. Rhodes hoped that the efforts to settle tho land would be successful, and he re>marked that in tho South Island (lie Government had settled an area of 65 acres [similarly to Heatherlea.' "Tho block hnd |been cut up into five-acre.sections, bouses[built, and the occupants given twentyffivo year's in which to' pay off their liabiliity. This policy of .settling the land Bhonld bp continued. (Hear, hear.) Mr. Rhodes. congratulated the society on the .excellence of the stock, and tho success (of the show. I Mr. Rhodes read the following letter jwhich he had received from the Premier: '"In connection with your visit to levin i to-morrow, I shall bo glad if you will kindly convey to members of tho HorowhcnuaA. and P.-Association-my thanks for . their iitvitation to tho annual show. Whiio it would have given me pleasure to have been present at tho function, 1 regret that tho stato of my hcalsli and engagements in Wellington render it impossible for me to go to Levin on Wednesday. At the.samo time, will you please express to the gathering ray good wishes for the success of tho show."
i An abscntco from the grounds was Mr. iB. E. Gardener, tho association's secretary, 'who has been ill. Mr. Gardener sent a message, stating that ho was improving, and wishing the show success. In his speech, tlio Hon. Mr. Rhodes expressed the hopo that Mr. Gardener would toon be quito restored to health.'^ Lively features of tho day's outing wero tho two pony races, populuar ovents at some shows., Tho I'aco for tho smaller i ponies was iron by Mr. R. MDonald's Togo, who was very nicely handed by the boy "on deck." Togo ran second in the other race, but the. winner, Mr. E. Bevan's Mantilla, was never, asked to frallop.
