Haiti, called Hispaniola. by Columbus, and" afterwards, San Domingo, is the ec.cond'largest island of the Antilles, lying , between Cuba and' Puerto Bico. Its population is' about .1,000,000. There are two States in the. island. The larger is the Republic of Sun Domingo. The Republic of Haiti occunies the western portion of the island, and has a population estimated at 2,500.000 (95 per cent, negroes, and tho remainder mulattocs). It was originally a French colony, but was proclaimed irirtepemlpnt in 1801, and is governed under a constitution drawn up. in' 1889. ■ 'The p.teciitivo power is in the hands of « President, Who receives n salary of ,£4BOD. The Chamber of 95 members is elected directly by all ronlc citizens, and the Senate . is. elected indirectly. The former's term of..office,is three years and the letter's six years, and members of the two Houses elect p. President for feven, years. In August. 1912, Genpral Tnncr»<le Aueuste was elected President. The official religion of the island is Roman Catholic, and elementary education is free.
