THE CARNIVAL.
COMMITTEES AT WORK. The committees who havo in hand tho arrangements for the coming Citizens' Carnival aro now at work, holding meetings regularly, and members of them aro attending to details individually.
A,mooting of the Sports Committeo was held in tho Mayor's room last night, Mr. A. Marryatt presiding. Mr. R. W. M'Vill.v made a proposal that the Carnival Committeo should take over control of the Wellington apiatour athletic championships, in considoration of a payment of £50 to tho Wellington Centre of tho N.Z.A.A.A. The meeting was alwavs a profitable ono, he said, and tho .Wellington branch wero quite' ready to run tho meeting, being, satisfied that they could make at least £50 out of it. If tho Carnival Committeo would not take over the meeting, the association would still bold it. but he thought it would bo a profitable venture for the Carnival Committee to take tho meeting,, for it should not bo difficult to clear more than £50 out of it.
On tho motion of Mr. M. Luckie, it was resolved that it he a recommendation to the Central Executive to accept tho offer made by the Wellington Centre of the N.Z.A.A.A., and to hold the meetinc on Saturday, March 7.
Mr. M'Vill.v stated also that the Centre would be willing to assist tho committeo in any other athletic events which thev might run on' evenings or at any other time. On behalf of .tho" nor.ing Association, he promised that a tournament would be arranged for the benefit of the Carnival oh some suitable night in the Town Hall. It was arranged that the sub-commit-tee having charge of tho proposed united schools' athletic display report next week.
The sub-committeo having control of the proposed axemen's events were also instructed to report at the meeting next Tuesday. It was agreed that the letter (not to hand) containing a proposal from tho Swimming Association to hold an evening sports meeting in Tc Aro Baths should bo sent on te the Baths Committee of tho council.
Mr. G. S. Hill consented to retain tho position of secretary to tho committee; and Mr. J. H. Pollock was elected deputy-chairman. Sub-committees were appointed to interview the bowling and tennis authorities, with a view to their arranging to hold tournaments in aid of the carnival.
It was decided tlyit steps be taken to secure the attendance in Wellington of the aviator, Mr. J. J. Hammond, and to engage him to give an exhibition at the motor races at Trentliam.
A. meeting of tho Side-Shows Committeo was also held in a room- at the Town Hall, and there was a general discussion as to what side shows would provo profitable and attractive.' Amongst now features which it was decided to introduce this year are a baby show and a photoaranhic competition, both of which displavs will be shown in the Concert Chamber <v? the Town Hall.
