UNIVERSITY SENATE.
PAPERS IN ENGLISH. FAULT FOUND WITH EXAMINER. (By TelefTiph.-PrMi Association.! Dunedln, Jamrary 27. riio University Senate resinned its sessions to-day, the C'lianetllor (Sir Robert Stout) presiding. The final report of the Entrance Examinations Committee contained the following recommendations:—!. That the request of the secondary schools conference that tho fco for re-examination in one subject at the matriculation examination ha reduced to one guinea be granted. 2. That a list of all successful candidates in the entrance examinations l)c printed in the report of the December Examinations Committee, and published in the minutes, and that copies be sent to the principals of schools who have- presented candidates as soon as possible after its adoption. 3. That tho marks gained by candidates in the matriculation examination bo reduced to a common standard, and that Hieso be published with numbers, instead of publishing those- candidates who failed. Tho report was adopted. Englneors' Travelling Scholarship. Tho Science Committee recommended that the regulations relating to the engineers' travelling scholarship bo amended to read, in effect, that the holder of a scholarship shall, within six months of its award, proceed to seme other country approved by tho Charcellor, and there profitably employ Iris time, during tho whole term of liis scholarship, in acquiring a knowledge of his profession, and shall, at the end of every three months, furnish to the Chancellor through tho professor in charge of the School of Engineering, Canterbury College, a full and satisfactory report detailinp; his employment during this period. ' The recommendation was agreed to. An Examiner's Neglect. The Authors and Periods, Economics, and Commerce Committee recommend— 1. That the professors of English bo thanked for calling the attention of tho Senate to the neglect of instructions by the exam'iner in. English, and that they bo informed that tho attention of the University agent in England will bo called to tho matter. 2. That the Registrar be instructed to draw the attention of the University agent to tho fact that, in the English examination papers for 1913, practically no attention.was paid by tho examiner to tho suggestion that a choice of questions should be allowed, and that the quantity of the vowels in the AngloSaxon passages should be carefully marked. This was agreed to. Habaus Prize. The Authors and Periods, Economics, and Cornmerce Committeo also recommended that the Senate adopt tho suggestions made by tho principals of training colleges ro tho habeus prize, viz.: 1. That the prize bo an annual ono of not more than £5. 2. That at least two years' notice of tho subjects of the essay be given. The committee also recommended that tho . examiners for the ■habcus prize for 1914 be Messrs. T. S. Foster, M.A., C. F. Salmond, M.A., and G. Hogben, M.A.; for 1915, Mr. J. S. Tennant, M.A., Bs.C, Professor T. A. Hunter, M.A., Ms.C, and Mr. G. Hogben, M.A. Tho Authors and Periods Committee recommendod %t<the^ ;,|ir.stj,pait, of.. Any matriculated student of the University whose namo is on the books of an affiliated collcgo, and who has attended tho lectures and passed its annual examination shall be deemed to havo kept tho terms of tho. year provided that, before presenting himself for a University examination for which the keeping of tenii3 is required, he must have passed tho college examination in the subjects in which he offers at a stage corresponding to thai of such University cxaminaiton,' 1 This was agreed to. It was decided that notification of alterations made in degreo courses btho Senate bo sent out to the staffs of collegas not later than the end of February.
