SOUTH SEA CYCLONE.
. DAMAGE IN SOCIETY ISLANDS. .* (By Telecrari.- -Press Association.) Auckland, January 26. , The steamer Detmold has arrived'from Matatea Island, 125 miles from Tahiti. She reports that on January 4 and 5 Matatea experienced a cyclone. The Detmold -steamed seaward outside for eight days. She sustained no damage. . On returning to Matatea it was found /hat lSOft. of tho pier had been destroyed, together with the houses thereon and a number of boats. About 100 shanties occupied by natives wero wrecked. There was HO loss of life. The Detmold was unable to load phosphates consequent on tfifi wreckage of iho wharf, and camq on to Auckland in iwllast.
