Extracts from the log of the captain of the steamer La France, published in Noumcan papers, covering the Ambrym' incident, state that tlie natives'were asked if they wanted to board La Fraueo and bo conveyed safely to Port Sandwich. They accepted readily, and commenced embarking. Suddenly two launches with white people aboard, who were quito unknown to the crew of La Franco, appeared on tho scene, and incited tho natives to leave .La France. A little scono followed. Notico was given Dr. Bowie (of the Mission Hospital) and his ass-oeiatesnot to interfere, and upon their refusal to desist thoy wero threatened with a sprinkling. Seeing thoy did not budge, tho steamer's pump was put in action, aiul Dr. Bowie and associates were copiously drenched. ; It is also alleged that Dr % Bowie dragged the natives from La France's boat, and told them La Franco was recruiting for, Noumea. La' :. Franco rescued 471 natives from danger.
