Mr. Crosswell declared that,, owing to the proclamation of martial law, lio issued leaflets instead of giving' advico orally, He wished to advise tho men as to tho best way of conducting themselves, especially in regard to pre-, venting public violence, ami added that lie would always adviso the men, once they struck, to stand together and be lo.val to ono another. Tho Crown Prosecutor admitted that thero was nothing very inflammatory in the pamphlet; no doubt Mr. Crosswoll's intention was not violence. Tho pamphlet-, however, was calculated to induce a continuation-of the strike. Mr. Crcsswcll's sentence wiil prevent him attending tho opening of Parliament on the 30th. Tlie colony being under martial law, no appeal is possible. Tho Magistrate held that the preamble of the .pamphlet was likely to cause disaffection. Mr. Crcaswell being an educated man and a member Of Parliament ought to be punished more severely than others. Ho would not inflict hard labour, though ho thought it was deserved. THE "STRIKE HERALD." PRINTER AND OTHERS FINED. Pretoria, January M. Miles, printer of the. "Strike Herald," was fined £25 or a month's imprisonment. It is understood that a general court-' martial, under General Lukiti, will be convened for tho summary iyial of tho four men, Drake, St-eyn, Fergtiena, and Oliver. Tho first two will bo charged with causing an explosion, and the others with having explosives in their possession. The section of martial law under which the court will bp convened prescribes a sentence of death for these offences.
