A FIJIAN AT THE BATHS. . Unseasonable Weather. The weather-r-ospeeially tho high northerly winds, which have prevailed of late—has not given the water that alluring attractiveness which one might expeet- at this period of the season. Of course, tho high winds bring big breakers, and those who indulge in surf bathing find a pleasure in that, but, on the other hand, the flying sand is troublesome. Even at the baths, where, the sand fiend cometh not, the effect «tf ouo of our northerly "blows"—they are sometimes like African simoons—is depressing. The accommodation at the baths, so far as this season has gone, has not been heavily taxed. Tho Fijian at Te Aro. A most consistent swimmer at the Te Aro Baths just now is a Fijian named Manama. All day long he swims about and amuses the schoolchildren, who seerii to welcome him much as one welcomes a long-lost friend. Like all Islanders, he is, of course, a good swimmer, and it may not be long before we hear of him putting up some fast' times. Be is a rare hand at swimming under, water, and can easily da 75 yards'with-, out rising to the surface.' He states,' in fact, that ho could stay under longer if it were not for the fact that Wellington water is colder than tho seas which lie has been used to. His time for fifty yards under water • is stated as being 35sec. He can also cut out a 50yds. dash in 28-1 sec. He has a good powerful semi-crawi. A Few Splashes. . . Water P?K ; ' ■ Those who were present, at the Te Arr> Baths on Saturday afternoon last ivere fortunate in seeing one of the finest games' of water polo yet played in Wellington. The match was the first of the second round in tho senior chni--nionship, the competing teams being Swifts ami Old Boys. Shortly after ptay had commenced it could lie seen that the teams were, fnirlv evenly-matched, and tho snbseouent play provid this to be correct. Throughout the game there wore one or two fouls, which the refe?eo was not slow , to notice, hut otherwise the game was particularly clean and fast. .Tenkinsofl proved himself beyond all dotsbf to ba the most capable exponent of the irnmo in both teams. His knack of nicking the ball out, of the water and tlm force with which he threw it won for him the appreciation of the sncetstors .He was.certainly responsible for Swifts' win.. Fordham was not un to the mark, his nlay appearing to lack energy. Smith" played well, but was a litMe slow, in .tho mutter of feeding his M'Grath battled hard, and succeeded in compiling two eonls. It should not. be long before he becomes a verv capable•"ptayr. Little had very little work to do, but what lie did was done <voll. ■ In the Old Bars' +«ani.'. Lpvv was a tower of. strength.' He played n good hard game for his Colours, and it wag «ot his fault that the team went under. He and Capper, 'another good player, scored the onlv two goals. Newman, though a formidable opponent, has not yet mastered nil the ' science of f'e game. Once he does so, however, his .place in future renreseniniive te.i"'s should be assured. His fault lies i» O'-e f:\et that he has not. yet ncqui'-ed the knack of nicking nn the ball. Ho, however, rendered food service for.Old Bovs. .who, on the whole, have a team which .is verv nearly equal..in;..-calibre to that .of Swiits..■ Standard Certificates. . Coming Carnival, Tiio Wellington Centro intends to nave present at the carnival on February 14 as ( many of the crack swimmers in New Zealand as possible, and for this reason they will hold tho carnival two days before the commencement of the New Zealand championships. ■ The secretary of the local centre {Mr. ; Stevenson) Ims received a.dvice- from tho Waiteniata Swimming Club, Auckland, to tho effect that. M. Champion will probably be one of the competitors. Another likely starter from tho northern city is. Sill ton, who rccontly defeated : Champion by, Syds. over this 220 yds. distance,-with n handicap of lOsec." It is stated that' Sintoii is a particularly good swimmer, and is considered good lor any distance-im to a- mik>.
