UNIVERSITY SENATE.
EXAMINATION PAPERS, Board of moderators WANTED. (By ToleETapli.—Press Association.! Dunctlln, January 22. The University Senate decided to-day to request tho Otago Aledical Faculty to obtain from the chairmen of the Auckland, Wellington, and'Christchurch Hospital Boards permission for medical students to attend tho hospitals for clinical study and to ascertain whether the boards could provide the students with board and lodging. Professor A. P. W. Thomas was rcappointed a governor of tho Auckland ■G rammer School. Professor P. Alarshall moved: — (1) "That Section 4 of the statute course in science (calendar 1913-14 p. 168, linos 9, 10, and 11} bo amended by striking' out the words 'provided that a candidate mar, in lieu of a sixth subject, repeat ono of the subjects in which ho has already passed, such subject not being a literary subject.' and substituting therefor tho following words: 'Provided that a candjdate may in his final examination (a) in lieu of a sixth subject repeat ono of the subjects in which he has already .passed';. or (b) 'in lieu of the fifth and sixth subjects repeat any two. subjects in which ho has already passed'; in either case a repeated subject shall not be one of tho following: Greek, English, French, German, military science." (2) "That this alteration . shall take effect on tho first. day of January, •1914." (3) -'That it.be referred to the Statutes Committeo to give effect to this resolution." After a short discussion the matter was referred to the Science Committee to report upon. Mr. Hogben moved: "That in the statute 'degree of Bachelor of Science,' education bo added to the list of subjects in Section 1, and, similarly, at the end of Sections 2 and 4." Tho mover said he saw. no reason why education should be excluded from tho list of subjects taken in addition to the physical science subjects in the B.Sc. degree. This matter was referred to the Science Comimtloe. ■ ■. Professor Hunter moved:— "That candidates.-for'B;Sc. degree be allowed ■to substitute for German or French a reading knowledge of both •French and German, and that the teachers' of modern languages in tho affiliated colleges be requested to confer with the science faculties and : submit a sehemo to'.thp next lnceting'of the Senate." This was referred to the Science Committee. . ,: " Professor Hunter moved:— "That a Board of Moderators be appointed for matriculation examinations." The mover said that his motion was, in away, a now .departure. ;He only asked for the approbation of the principle. The matter could be reterred to the Entranco Examination Committee. Mr. Tibbs, in seconding the motion, referred to two papers which shoived the need of a moderating board. . ■ The- Chancellor; Who do-you suggest should .bo the Hoard? Professor .Hunter: I would rather leave.that to the Entrance Examination Committee. The Chancellor: It will bo an exceedingly difficult matter to get a board set up-. ■ ' In tho course of a short discussion, it. was made clear that tho principle Was approved.. Finally the Senate decided to refer the matter to tho Entrance Examination Committeo. , Mr.-Von Haast moved:— ; "That some system of Toyision of tho New Zealand law examination papers is advisable, and that the matter be referred to the Law Comniittee to frame such a system for consideration by the Senate." ' The mover said that;papers did not show a due sense of proportion, and sometimes the syllabus was disregarded. The matter was referred to the Law and Finance Committee- for a report.
