The Japanese (Jonsul-General has received an official cable message from Tokio stating that although the crater at Sakura-shima is likely to continue its activity for somo time, no danger is now anticipated. Aji examination of tho district showed that S'lo houses in nine villages out of 18 on the island were totally burnt down, a large number of domestic animals were lsilled or injured, but the casualties amongst the inhabitants seem less than was expected. Other districts, such. as Kimotsuki and Kora, also suffered damage from the preat amount of .pumice stone ashes which fell. Beside- the 20,000 inhabitants in the Sakura-shima district the sufferers iii these other districts need relief. In the city of Kago-shima 18 were killed, and in the neighbouring districts 87 injured aiid 71' slightly wounded. Thirty-five houses wore totally demolished and ma'nji partially (destroyed- The prominent buildings sustained no dam l '' age. . : About half the refugees are returning and order is gradually being restored. The Echoole will bo reopened iii a day or two.
