The steamer left Bay on December 18 with a cargo of cnal for Auckland, and moderate weather was met with .till January 8, when a heavy gale blow tip from the nor'-west. Tho weather showed no signs of abating on the -following day, and for throe days tremendous seas smashed on board amidships and on the starboard quarter. Great damage, was done to the deck fittings, and the' position became very serious when the wheel and steam steering gear carried away, leaving the Hornfels tossing helpless in the. _ storm. Steps were at once taken to utilise the hand steering gear, which is situated aft. AVinehes and tackles were rigged, and, amid great difficulties, the officers succeeded in keeping the ship nmning before tho gale. On January 11 the weather showed some signs of clearing up, ant] thence to her arrival at Auckland, conditions were more favourable. The vessel's companion-ways were carried away, the davits were badly bent and twisted, and other deck fittings suffered. Repairs will bo carried out in Auckland.
