DUNEDIN'S TOWN HALL.
♦ NEW WAY OF CALLING DESIGNS. (By Tclesraph.—Press Association.) Dunedin, January 21. At a meeting of the City Council last night the result of tho competition for designs for the proposed new Town Hall, at the rear of the present municipal buildings, in tho Octagon, was made k'ovhi. Thero w ; erc no loss' than 32 entries, and the contest was won by Mr. H. Mandeno, of Dunedin. Tho competition was in two parts:—Preliminary and final. As the result of tho preliminary,' Mr. S. Hurst Scager (assessor) selected four designs—those of Messrs. Mandeno, H. T. Hodges (Sydney), M'Donald, and Fleming (Dunedin), and H. M. Helm (Wanganui). In the final selection he placed them in the order named. Tho Mayor moved that the report bo referred to the Finance' Committee, to report as to what might be done noxt. There might bo a great deal of difficulty, at the present time, in getting a loan sanctioned. He thought that this was the first competition that had been held by any public body hi New Zealand on terms entirely satisfactory to' the Architects' Association, '.o'o work of the. assessor had been done with great conscientiousness, and it appeared that the best-designed plan was also the most economical. Tho riiotion was carried._ In terms of the conditions, each of tho four designs selected in the preliminary competition are entitled to £75, while the author of tho winning de 7' sign is also entitled to £100, which, however, is merged in commission in the event of the building being proceeded with within twelve months.
