POOR OPENING.
OUR CRICKETERS IN. AUSTRALIA. , MATCH AT MELBOURNE. ■By TeleerapU-Pfesi (Rec. January 21, 9.30 p.m.) Melbourne, January 21. Only a handful of spectators'witnessed tho opening stages of the' match between tho New Zealand cricketers and the Melbourne Cricket Club. Tim weather was pleasant. A nice display of batting was given by Willis Saiidford, who gave a chance of being stumped at his first ball, and d.royp Jieeso for six. Helity played attractively, and drovo Sneddon for six. He gave two chances. The fielding was smart. Ilecso bowled admirably, mixing his deliveries judiciously. ■ Bennett retired after eleven overs owing to tho pain from nit old injury to his leg, Sonicrville being substitute. At one stage- SneddonV average was two for three. The hatting of tho New Z-calanders was unattractive, uninteresting, and colourless.
The South Melbourne Chili is entertaining the New Zoalaiidcrs to-night at tho theatre, and afterwards -at supper, in token of appreciation of tlrc hospitality extended to them in their New Zealand tour. Scores:— - ■ ■■■'

By Telegraph—Press AKseiotion-Con.vriEh't Sydney, January i\. Tlie "Sydney Jlorning Herald',", re* viewing the Board of Control's decision on the subject of touring teams., says that unless tlie board is approached liefore any invitations for n fore inn tour t.) players of international, standing are distributed, serious coniiiiiciitions . may arise. If there is a recognised authority supposed to control the movements of players who aspire to the honour of national representation, then nothing must ba tolerated that has a tendency to reduce that authority to tlie "level of absurdity.
