UPPER HUTT TOWN BOARD
The fortnightly meeting of the Upper Ilutt Town Board was held on Monday evening. Present: Commissioners Webb (chairman), Bongo, Bennington, Kemp, M'Curdy, and Robertson. Correspondence was received from the General Post Office in the matter of an additional telephone wire; from tho board's solicitors (Messrs. Wilford and Levi) regarding Clarke's Estate; from the Department of Internal Affairs, giving .the .board po,*y.er,.tp register motors and motor vehicles';'"from , the AVellingtoii'Kacing Club, asking particulars of pressure and probability of securing connection with the board's water service; from Mr. G. J; Taylor, asking, as a ratepayer, for the required connection with the water service; from the Valuation Department, promising to ijiako a revaluation of all properties within the Town Board area; from the Public Trustee, granting an additional ten per cent, above £11,000 water loan already granted: and from Mr, A, J. M'Curdy, asking permission to Meet poles for carrying electric power in Princes Street in connection with the local picture syndicate's enterprise. After considerable discussion, both maior and minor requests were granted, only that of the Wellington ftacing Club being held in abeyance, to enable' the chairman's motion to rescind a former resolution of the board to refuse all applications for water (outside the Town Board area) for ft period of three years, beiiia; upheld or rescinded. Arising out of delay in issuing rate notices, the question of employing outside clerical assistance let! fo a notice of motion for next meeting: "That the totni clerk's snlary be raised from, £120 to £156 per annum, and that he be required to attend from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily, excepting Saturdays up to noon." The action of the waterworks engineer (Mr. G. Lning-Meason) in carrying water-mains a few chains, bolow tlte Town Board boundary at Trentham end was responsible for a warm passage between the engineer and Commissioner M'Curdy, but eventually received the approval of the -majority of the board members, upon explanation that it was thought- advisable to carr.v the "blowoff" pipe to the old gravel-nit, in preference to the Moonshine Road watercourse, near Mr. Backstrom's, as previously indicated. The chairman's motion: "That tlsfi' hoard take steps to promote the acquisition of lands for si public- domain and recreation ground," was approved of, and a committee, consisting of Commissioners Kemp, M'Curdy, and tin mover, was set up to interview owners of suitable properties, and report to the board. ■ After notice of special meeting to fix statutory closing days, and tho fixing of dog tax at live shillings per head, as formerly, tho meeting adjourned j.
