ONE MILE OF FLAME
GREAT TE AROHA BUSH FIRE. (Bγ TelesraDh.—Pres9 Association.) Auokland, January 18. Tho fire on To Aroha Mountain is subsiding. On Friday evening a fringe of .fiamo a mile long advanced slowly down on the town, and was watched .by hundreds of people. Hugo trees 60 feet high wore levelled in an incredibly short time, and tho blazo made when tho flames caught tho big nikau trees caused great illuminations. Tho natural bush nnd plantations destroyed will take years to replace. Late on Friday night tho heat became intense and continued yesterday, and with tho dense smoko hanging, over tho district and town existenco was niado almost intolerable. The conditions are pleasanter to-day and the danger to tho town is past.
