Kershaw (overseer) inspected tho properties that had been; affected by tho late flood in. tho Taita I district, Messrs. Caleinai and Hooper had lost heavay, and he thought that the board should consider tho yuestion of raising funds for : tho protection of these and other properties in the event of further floodß. On the south of Mr. Welch's property the river was inclined to work its'way eastward, and flroynes had to bo erected there to keep the river from working towards the low beach near Mason's Gardens. At Parker's beach to tho north of Moiling Bridge the nvor wns_ gradually removing tho beach. At' Pitcaithly's tho river was working to the western, side, aud Mr. Rteaitlily had been instructed' not to remove any mow gravel from tho beach. Owing to tho large quantity of gravel coming down the river and the small amount that the contractors were removing from the beaches it seemed to him tli.it the boati would have to takn other steps to hare tho gravel removed. A bnr had formed at the rivor mouth, and lie recommended that Mr, Laini;-M«asoii,tho board's engineer, bo asked to report as h> the host means of opening the mouth. After considerable discussion it was decided to hold over further consideration until a reply had been received from tho Harbour Board. Sonio aiemhers expressed tho opinion that'tins bndy was responsible for tho remoter of the bar, In his report the overseer (Mr f Kershaw) stated thnt the boom groyne ■opposite Mason's Gardens in tho upper district had been completed at a cost of £70 &. lid."
