Before the Dominions Commission, Mr. Austin Wilson, of tho Hu!l-Barns-lcy Haihvaj' Company, who recently toured Australia and New Zealand, advocated a regular steamship service, developing new markets. Ho recommended a modm-ate subsidy from tho oversea Dominion for at least a year, until the service was self-paying. . Mr. Wilson suggested that the Dominion Governments should subsidise a staim sen-ire to Midi. He was satislied that with such ;i subsidy, before tho. oiul of the year Roll would be in a position to. deal with tho largest vessel onuaged in tho Australian tirulo. Mr. Trechven, Chairman of tho Australasian Section of tho Lnmbn Chamber of Commerce, advocated a standardised bill of lading lor all Australian linos, lie added that the shipowners' bad announced that if Australia and iN'uw Zealand gave preference to British goods, the Liennan lines would give freight preference to German goods. -. Mr. Ross Johnson, general manager, of the Port of Bristol, testified to the inadequate steamship service' to Australia and Now Zealand, ridding that New Zealand and other oversea countries had asked for better facilities for trading with the. larcje area directly served through' Bristol. In the three Blue Bonks of mimit.es of evidence taken by tho Dominions Commissioa in New Zealand and Australia, just issued, 662 pages are devoted to tho Commonwealth avid 233 to Now Zealand.
