NOTES AND COMMENTS.
rux qmncoi.J Nominations for tho Taranaki Jockey Club's summer fixture closo with the secretary, Mr. E. P. Webster, at 9 o'clock this evening. . ' ;' Tho Ashbnrton trainer, E. Griffin, with the full brothers, Chudic and Svoaborg, has arrived at Trentham. It. Berry will rido the former and E. Lowo the- latter in tlieir engagements next week. No rider has .vet been secured for Sinapis in the Wellington Cup, but if Peg does not start, R. Berry, who steered her in the' New Zealand Cup, will havo the mount. Tho report that Berry was to rido Ladoga is incorrect, as W. Bell has been secured for Mr. P. Soames's gelding, but in view of the suspension of A. Oliver, the Highden stable will, of course, require Bell's services, sc> a further .hunt will have to bo made for a horseman for Ladoga. Quito a number of jockeys have been booking rides in the Selling - Plate and Disposal Stakes at Trentham, but a reference to the conditions of these races will show that they are for apprentices only. E. J. Rae's charge, Bleriot, reached Trentham from Auckland yesterday morning. The suspensions imposed by the Wanganui District Committee came as a bombshell to several owners who had engaged Oliver and Pritchard to rido tlieir horses at Trentham. It is unfortunate that the decision could not have been made known earlier so that owners could have had plenty of time to secure other riders. The penalty will hit the riders named very hard, particularly Pritehard, wliom it will be remembered has only lately got-back into the saddle after an enforced absence of IS months.
TRACK WORK AT TRENTHAM. Matters were not particularly interesting at Trentiinm yesterday niorniflg, and very little work of importance was accomplished. Both the tan and grass gallops were opened and tho work was split up between the two. Gipsy Belle and Pavlova galloped six furlongs on tho grass. The former got all tho best of tho start, and was in front the whole way. Peg was given easy work, but was lamo.ou pulling up. Her bruised foot has not' improved, and it will not bo known for sdme- days whether she will bo, ablo to./.start. : • ■ ■ • On.tho tan, Scott's pair, Prince Laddo and Roumania, ran half a mile in 51i5ec.' On the grass Rinaldo ran a mile, assisted by Salzburg over the last seven furlongs, in lmin, 47scc. Nothing definite is yet known as to. his owner's intentions, but probably an announcement will be made in a day or two. Stepney was far too good for Parky over a mile on tho tan, which took lmin. 52see. The latter has i een on the easy list for some time, and this was his first gallop. Kilrain (A. Reid), on the grass, galloped nine furlongs, the last milo taking lmin. 45seo. This was tho best gallop of tho morning, and the Cup candidate, who looks very fit, will not want for friends on Wednesday next. Mowbray covered half a mile pleasingly in 50 l-ssec. Hoopoe beat Belasco, who was booted, over six furlongs in lmin. 19 2-oscc. finished badly at the end of a mile, which took linin. 47 3-osoe. ■■ ■■ Aratiatia ran six furlongs on the tan in lmin. 17sec. Palisade, Chudic, and Sveaborg were worked at'te-r breakfast, but were not extended.
