CONCILIATION COUNCIL.

THE METAL WORKERS' DISPUTE

The Conciliation Council met yesterday morning to deal with the metal workers' dispute. Mr. P. Hally presided, while the assessors for the employers were Messrs. W. Cable,. D. Robertson, and W. iMilligan ; The union was represented by Mr. h. Kennedy, with Messrs. A. Bell and A. Murray as assessors. In brief, tho claims of the union were as follow:—Forty-four hours to constitute a week's work. The minimum rate of wages for certain detailed worn to be Is. 4Jd. per hour. Special provisions wero included as to overtime, night shifts, and as to tho payment of "dirt money," and tho employment of boys, and youths. Stipulations w.ero also made in regard to suburban ana country work. The new award was co remain in' force for one year. Mr. Kennedy stated the position was unfortunately that during tho time tho union came into existence there was great industrial trouble in the City, and , they had to , blame the strike for being in the unsettled position to-day. Ho was sure, however, that as the result of that day's conference they would bo able- to come to a settlement.

The' council then wont into coinniittee to discuss' tho' matter, and it was eventually decided to adjourn the sitting to January 27. when the boilermnleers' dispute will have heoi dealt with.
