The first meeting for the new year of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals was held ; yesterday. Mr. J. Jameson presided. It was decided to purchase ten drinking troughs for dogs, and have them distributed over the City. ; A letter was received from Mr. J, Brown, asking the society to make an endeavour to liavo another water trough put up near the tramway junction at Courk'iiay Place. The writer stated that he found that thcro were abuiit. 70 horses connected with the Fruit Mart passing in the vicinity daily. The City Council is to bo written to in regard to the matter. The inspector (Mr. Seed) reported that, ho had ordered off the road a' horso which lie had observed yoked to a van in Kent Terrace, and which appeared to bo suffering - pain in its limbs. A veterinary surgeon had pro-' nonnced the animal as unfit for work. Later on two or three occasions he had observed the same, horse being worked, ami he had decided to take action in the matter. The inspector's action in this respect was approved. Other cases dealt with were- also reported. The General Manager of Railways ivroto forwarding a railway pass for' uso of the society's inspector for the current year. A letter of thanks has been sent.
