Mr. J. S. Evans, S.JI., priieiclod. .Henry Jefl'prd was accused ef having assaulted Jlay OiWions, witli iwhom ho had boon living, at 34 Collcgo Street. Ho was charged, also, with Swing idlo and disoruorly. k\:f '.'■''■; :.. ■ Jlny Gibbons said in her ovidenco that ono day she put her hand in accused's pocket to get sixpence, and slio pulled out a riiiß. Jcffcrcl cried out: "Put tliat back, you ; tliat's got crook." Witness replied :-vv:Tlien I'll tcll.Cnssells." It was then tliat Jofferd assaulted her. Ho punched and kicked her all about the body, and knocked hqr senseless. On the previous day ho'had "put her to sleep from half-past three till ten o'clock." Detective-Sergeant Cassclls described Jcfferd as a man whom ho had notknown to work during tho past year. Sly grog was sold in the house in which Jeffcrd lived. Magnus Badger said that Jefford was a very undesirable loafer, and that; May Gibbons had told witness thai' Jeffcrd had threatened to murder her/ On the charge of assault JefFcrd was sentenced "to two months' imprisonment, and on the chargo of being idlo and, disorderly he was sentenced to three months' imprisonment. ■ THE SECOND CASE. Thomas Ileeves pleaded not guilty to a, charge of his having assaulted John Slattery, and he denied an allegation that lie had broken his prohibition order. Slattery, who is 65 years of age, said that while, ho was Standing outsido the Hotel Cecil on Monday .afternoon Eeoves walked up and twice struck him violently in the face. Tho Magistrate: Did he give you that eye you have? ■ Witness: Yes. Two men who were near the hotel at the time said that they saw Reeves hit the old man, apparently without provocation. ' Reeves alleged tliat the old man h'a-d first assaulted him. He was sent to prison for two months for tho assault, and for breaking his prohibition order was fined £3, in default to undergo seven days' imprisonment. A WATERSIDE MATTES. Samuel I'omoroy was remanded till Monday next , on charges of his having assaulted Jack Thompson and of having used threatening behaviour on tho King's Wharf. Mr. J. F. W. Dickson appeared for tho defendant. Tlie Inspector of Police remarked that--there had been no serious results from the assault. THEFT CASE. Thomas Yates was remanded till Friday on a chargo of the theft of sixladies' overcoats, valued afc £9, belonging to William Haines.
