MIRACULOUS ESCAPE.

HORSE AND TRAP FALL OVER AN EMBANKMENT. (By ' Telegraph.—Pres3 Association,) • Ashburton, January 12. A serious accident occurred at Mount iWinterslow','on tho Motint Somers Road, If to yesterday afternoon. Mrs. Novm, with her year-old baby and three other children, Mrs. Bowden, senr. (80 years of age), and Messrs. Bowden and Nevm were driving in a,.heavy spring cart. ■ To mako tho load lighter Mr. Nevin alighted at the foot of the hill, and tho horse and cart, with tho rest of the ocjupants, proceeded up the incline. When some distance had been covered, l <ho horse commenced, to run backwards, jnd Mr. Bowden jumped from the vehicle. and attempted to stop it, but was unablo to do so.

Continuing downwards, the horso and vehicle, witb the remaining occupants, were ..precipitated over a perpendicular embankment thirty feet deep on to the shinglo and stones below. .■ Ihe cart and horse turned over three times, and tho cart rested on Mrs. Bowden and Mrs. Nevin, and one of the children was under the ..horse's feet, the remainder of the children being thrown clear.

Mr! Kevin managed to lift the. dray off the ■unfortunate women, and with Mr. Bowden extricated them from their perilous position. Both were found to be unconscious, and it was some considerable time before Mrs. Bowden was brought round. The child was brought from under the horse's feet, and was found to be considerably knockcd about and bruised. The other children escaped with scratches and a severe shaking. When attended by a. medical man early this morning, Mrs. Nevin was found to have sustained a broken collarbone, and Mrs. Bowden was nmeh bruised about the ribs. The children aro not seriously hurt, but are suffering from shock. Their escape is .described as miraculous.
