While coming down tho Otira Gorgo on this side, at ono of tho steepest pinches, a bolt gave way, and disconnected the engine l'rom control. The car began to whirl down tho steep road with a sheer drop on one side and a bushy bank on tlio other, almost instantly attaining a speed set down at something like 100 miles an hour. The'chauffeur's only control was of tlio steering wheel, and seeing in a flash the only alternative to a plungo of 30 feet., ho turned tho car into the Imsli. It was badly smashed up, but the occupants escaped injury.
