OBITUARY.
$ A MEMBER OF STUART'S PARTY. By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyriclit Adelaide, January 10. Mr. M'Gorrery, one of the members of M'Douall Stuart's party, which first crossed Australia, is dead. John M'Douall Stuart, the most celebrated of Australian explorer*, made three attempts to cross the Continent, his last being successful. In May, 1859, he started on the first of his expeditions into the northern interior, mid explored tho country in the neighbourhood of Lakes Eyre. Gairdner (or Gardner), and Torrens. On November 4 lie again started from Chamber's Creek and returned on January 21, 1860, having found, as on his previous journey, several springs. On January 2, 1862, Mr. Stuart started forth to accomplish his great task of crossing the continent, reaching the river Strangways on June 14. ami the Eoper River on June 2G, and on July 24 came out on tho northern shore of Australia at Van Diemen's Gulf. The expedition returned safely to Chamber's' Creek on Dcceniher 5. Tho route Stuart followed is the one since adopted for the overland telegraph, lying considerably to tho west of Sturt'-s Stony Desert. A PROMINENT PASTORALIST. (Rec. January 12, 0.35 a.m.) Sydney, January 11. Obituary: Mr. E. White, of pell Trees Station, a prominent pastoralist, and breeder and owner of racing stock. He died after an operation.
