FIRE AT PETONE.
About 3 o'clock yesterday afternoon a fire'broke.out at 22 To Puni Street, Petone, a four-roomed house, occupied by Mr. Arthur Smith and owned by the Gear Meat Co. Mrs. Smith, who was away at the time of tho outbreak, states that she left: home at 2.40, wliqu all fires in the liouse were extinguished. In fact, no firo had been kindled since about 9 a.m. that morning, 'l'he alarm was given by a neighbour from tho Ryan Street alarm-box, and tho brigade, although tho flames had a strong hold when, they arrived, and a gusty northerly wind was blowing, managed to confine the flames to the scullery roof (where the outbreak occurred). Little damage was done by the fire, but there was considerable damage by water. Tho actual insurance on the house is unknown, but on the block of buildings in the street the Now Zealand, Commercial Union, Royal, and Guardian 'offices have equal risks.
