BOWLS.

SCHEME OF HANDICAPPING. NEW SYSTEM SUGGESTED. (By Telegraph.— Special Correspondent.). Palmerston North, January 9. . At a meeting of tho Mahawatu Bawling Centre last night, ah interesting schemo of handicapping was submitted by Mr. H. N. Watson. It is based on tho schemo of handicapping of polo clubs in England. Mr. Watson explained that it was often' found that good players linked together and swept through a tournament winning everything—not only preventing inferior players from securing trophies, but also discouraging them. This often led to complaints, and consequently lit was desirable to have each team as equal as possible. This equality could be secured if players had a fixed handicap (given thein bv, their club). For instance) when picking a rink a certain maximum Was fixed, say 20. As the combined handicaps of each rink could not exceed that number tho rink must be comprised of bojvlers of different standing, for if. a man with a handicap of 10 was picking partners, lie must aim at getting the team whoso handicaps totalled Would give him the, required number or as near it as possible. ■Kit riiik must thus comprise players with handicaps of 10, 5, 3, and 2. It would be seen that inferior and gjood men wero together in the same rink. Tlio rinks were as a consequence equal in merit, and tlio poorer bowlers wero as much to tlio fore as the better ones. In golf all players wore handicapped from tli© champions in such manner that each mail's play with his handicap put him oh" a level with tho champions. The foar had been expressed that tho sclichie would not work. The polo people thought that, but now they universally adopted it. After analysing the scheme, the mooting decided to defer consideration of it until the annual meeting, to ena,blo the clubs in tho meantime to discuss it.
