CRICKET.
WELLINGTON V. OTAGO. VISITORS START WELL, FIRST EFFORT YIELDS 276. (Bj Tclegrojh.—Prcas Association.) Dunodln, January 0. The annual fixture between Wellington and Otago was commenced on tlio Carisbrook Ground at 2 o'clock this afternoon. The ground was in capital order, and the weather was perfect, except for a still southerly wind. Wellington won the toSS, and sent, in lliddlestone and Grimmett to faco tile bowling of Torranco and Ramsden. At 20 the former sent a sharp one to Siedeberg at cover-point, but tho fieldsman declined, it, .the ball falling a little short. Hiddiestono was batting nicely, and had made 15 of the total. Tho batsmen wero punishing the bowling, and 40 appeared at tho close of 25 minutes' play. Hiddiestono was credited with a fino hit over tho rails for 6. At *16 Downes took the ball from Torrance, and Hiddlestone survived two lives in tho first over. On the second occasion he lifted a ball clean into Alloo'shands at mid-off, but the fieldsman dropped it. Eckhold. replaced Ramsden with tlio hall, and Hiddlest'ono scored 14 off iiis first over. Seventy was telegraphed at the ©ltd of 40 minutes' play, Hiddiestono having 5G of the total to his credit. At 78 Hiddlestone fell a victim to one Of Downes's off-breaks, 78—1—64. M'Girr filled tlio vacancy. The incomer was not at all.comfortable with Downes, and was_ dismissed after making five. 84 — 2—5. Wagstaff partnered Grimmett. Tho century came in sight after 55 minutes 1 play. Grimnictt's time had now comoi He cut Torrance smartly into Downes's hands,at point, and the fieldsman made no mistake with it. 100—3— 17. Tho retiring batsman had been at the ivickets an hour for his 17. Wagstaff mado a swipe at Downes, and lost his wicket. 102—4—13. Downes had scctired three wickets at a cost of 24 runs. Hay was the next man, and play slowed up, tail minutes being required for ten riinSj and 20 minutes for tho next tcii. Ramsden again went oil with tho ball, replacing Torrance, but play was still slow and .uninteresting, Downes sent down five overs, ono run being scored off each over. Another change in the bowling saw Downes replaced bv M'Farlane, After 00 minutes' play 130 was telegraphed. Tho batsmen were appreciating tho slow bowling, and by steady cricket raised the score to 154, when Watson took the ball from M'Farlane. After two hours' play Eckhold bowled at the other end in placo of Ramsden. Notwithstanding tlie doilble change runs continued to come steadily; and the score was at 101 when Hay's stumps were disturbed by Torrance: 191—0—40. Tho partnership had proved very useful, and had yielded 89 runs. Wilson joined Joplin, and the,scoring board showed 200 after two and a half hours' play. Sis runs later Wilstm was dismissed by Downes. 200—G—7. Tucker opened his account by hitting Downes hard to tho off for four, and a few minutes later Joplin camo within an ace .of being run out, tlio ball being nicely returned to Downes by M'Farlane. Joplin reached his half-century at this stage. Ho had been at tho wickets 110 minutes. Tucker then lost his wicket, making an early hit at Torranco and missing him, 229—7—16. Blackiock partnered Joplin, who was now playiiig with more freedom. Tlio lattor soon rattled up another ton, mostr ly*:off'Torrance, and* with a single, 240 \Vtis signalled: Downes then got Blacklock : leg-before. '240—8—3. Tlio batsmen played steadily until tho score was 279, when Joplin was neatly stumped. 27G—9—80. Saunders succumbed to tho first ball, and tho innings closed at 5.30. A quarter of an hour later Watson and Alloo Opened for Otago, the former taking strike to Saunders, who seiit down a maiden. M'Girr had the ball at tlio other end. When 8 runs had been scored, Grimmett took tho Hal! from M'Girr, and at the close of tho first over stumps were drawn for the day. Tho scores are:—
