FUNERAL AT WAIKANAE.
The funeral of the Me Mr. Whitu Parata took place at AVaikailae yesterday, and; was attended by 'a concourse of "over a thousand people. The procession from the Native pa to the family cemetery was headed by the Ot-aki Native Band, and the service at the graveside was conducted by the Rev.. E. Jones, vicar of the parish, assisted by the Rev. R. Temuera, and Messrs. Rawiri Rota Tahiwi and Kipihana. The hymns in the servico were sung m Maori, the members of the Tahiwi family leading tho singing. By'the wish of the tribe, twelve pakeha residents of Waikanao acted as pall-bearers. The deceased was buried besido his father, the late Wi Parata. After the funeral Mr. Hira Parata delivered a speech in Maori, which was interpreted by tho Hon. Dr. Pomare, Native Minister, thanking those present for their attendance. The arrangements for tho funeral, wliieh were carried out in accordanco with Nativo custom, and involved a considerable amount of work, were made by Mr. Tom Parata.
