THE FRUIT SEASON.
LOW PRICES RULING IN THE NORTH.
The rain which fell at the beginning of December, follon-ed by tho hot weather of the last, two weeks, has'liad tho effect of bringing on the'fruit very quicklr in tho Auckland fruit-growing districts. At tho present time there is a glut on tho market, and the supply is exceeding the demand. Unfortunately the quality does not correspond with the increased quantity. Growers, according to the "Herald," arc apparently contenting themselves with sending into tho. market any and all of thb fruit that they have on hand. Owing to tho inferior quality of many of the consignments and to tho large ■ sujiply pricos have been ruling exceedingly low of lato —too low in fact,to be remuneritive to the growers. There arc signs, however, of an improvement in tho market. Growers aro realising that it pays them better in tho long run to look after tho quality rather than tho quantity. • "With a continuance of fine weather tho present season should prove to be almost a record one for Auckland, as fav as fruit is concerned. All kinds of tree fruits f.irp coming on well, and the growers should have no difficulty in keeping the market fully supplied with fruit of the highest quality. The present week will probably sec the last of the strawberries, the season for this fitvourifo delicacy having been a remarkably good one. ■
