Mr. W. B. Smith; headmaster- of the State School, and local meteorologist, is at present holiday-making in idlington. Mr. and Mrs. A. Roxburgh, who have resided in this district for upwards of twenty years, leave hero for ■Wellington this week, Mr. Roxburgh having secured a business' in Vivian StreetWhile visiting the bcaclt during the holiday season, a little girl, the daughter of' Mr. and Mrs. J. \V. Pepper, had a narrow escape from, being badly burned. Child-like she sat on a smouldoring log, with the result that her flimsy holiday attire wan soon ablaze. Mr. Albert Daniel, noticing the child's dilemma, immediately rushed to the rescue, subduing the flames just in time to prevent the girl being badly burned. As it was her dress and much of her underclothing, was burned, and her flesh blistered. It is understood the local Town Board are making provision to prohibit the. driving of stcek thro;i«li the. town between the hours of 8 a.m. and 6 p.m. The Waikunao Hack Racing Club have, lodged ail application for-a totalisator permit.
