THE CARELESS PEDESTRIAN.
(Sir,—As'a..motorist, of long standing I havo been much concerned by tlio steady ■; increase in the stupidity of tjtci pedestrian. On tlio evo or a nc\i year 1-wish .to. call your attention to the serious extent of this infirmity, fowl-' ing sure that, with your well-known do." siro to. improve the public welfare, I have but. to mention the desiro for you to evolve tlio remedy. Instead of tin usual denunciation' of motors and motorists after the occurrence of a so* called "accident,'' I would suggest-that a loaf might Ijo taken from Nature's' book'on the principle of the "survival of'.tiw fittest," and that. the. motorist, should bo hailed as a benefactor'of posterity.'' It cannot bo'for the ultimate good of any community that the individual who' steps into a, stream of busy traffic with-' out looking ahead, the silly ass who crosses a crowded tlioroughfaro whilst reading a newspaper, or tho selfish brutes who stroll tlirßO-ahreastdown' n Marrow fairway, should be so protected by "grand-motherly" by-laws as : to' porpetnala their kind to inherit their infirmities. I3y a rearrangement of bylaws and the consequent elimination of the "unfit, I !.we might y*=t live- to seo a community of eitizens agife of limb and alert of mind to rival the similarlvdeveloped London sparrow or th<s intelligence- of the street cur.—l am. ete., PORIRUA. .
