BARNES NOW IN THE LEAD. (By Telojr&Dh.—Proaa AjsoolattonJ Auckland, January 2. In the seventh round of the chess tournament the pairings were:—Sevcnie. v. Myers, Davies v. Wingfield, Grierson v. • Stewart, Hickson v. Kelling, Moore v. Barnes, Dodds v. Mason, Gyles v. James, Miles .a bye. Moore lost.a. pawn soon after starting his game with Barnes. The loss of a knight followed, and then he re? signed. In the Davies-Wingfield game, Davies won a pawn in the eighth move and another in tlie-"l3th, gave a. rook for a knight in tlio 25th, and Vingfield reSigned in tlio 33rd move. Dodds v. Mason (queen's knight open-ing).-—White emerged from tho opening .with two doubled pawns, while black, by a few strategic moves, aided by some vacillation on white's part, was a bio to- win a pawn, which left him with two passed pawns and practically command of tho board. After this , btack was able to malco good his entry into the enemy's camp, and winning a ■ pawn and-a knight soon reduced whito .to a crippled condition. Dodds rc.si0,11-;fid,->yl)pu,7ipate was impqment. I=l Sevnrne v; Myers (fourknights game). ---Sevcrne did not make the most of tho opening and drifted into a rather cramped position, affording Myers opportunities for attack. The latter however, did not choose the best line ot attack and Severno entered upon tho end fiamo witli a pawn to tho good. But his pieces had little freedom, and a few moves lator, a draw was agreed j , .110011 as there seemed to bo no prospect of either player being able to break through. Grierson v. Stewart (Buy Lopez).btewart won a pawn in middle game, and obtained a slight positional 'advantage, which ho maintained throughout, the end was precipitated by a blundor 011 Grierson's part involving the loss of his queen. Grierson resigned on tho 34th move.
Hicks v. • Ivelling (Mas Lange).—This was a very lively gamo. Hicks had the test of at for a long time, but ho did not apportion his time wisely, with tho .result that,, at►tlie cud of the second ( hour, ho was much pressed. . In consequence of this, he missed continuation, which would havo given liini a .draw at least, and probably tho superior gamo. He made a spccious move, which Kellrag speedily demonstrated to ;he unsound. Tho latter was then ablo to work off- a pretty mato in threo. Gyles V. James (Vienna Game).—Tho remarkable feature of this gamo was the ending; Each had a rook, and Gyles had .1 substantial majority ol pawns. James, by careful play, was ablo to diminish this superiority, little by little, until no pawns remained on tho board! Then a draw was agreed upon. Tho gamo lasted about seven hours, and tho ending attracted a great deal of attention. ■ There are now no arrears. 'Now that alf 'eHow-townsmen have' played each other, tho most interesting part of the tournament is to come. Tho scores to date aro shown below:—
