FIVE ARRESTS. CAMINC PARAPHERNALIA SEIZED. Quito a stir was caused in tho Chinese fjuarter of tho city last night, when tlio Mount Cook- polico raided soveral premises, suspected of being gaining Louses. For a couple of weeks past Detectivo Sergeant Cassells Lad Lad certain houses in Plaining Street and Taraiuiki Street undor surveillance, and tho movo b.y tho ■police last night was tho outeomo of his observations. Shortly after 7 o'clock in the evening, threo houses were visited simultaneously by sevetal members of tho Polico Force, working in pairs. Tlio party consisted of Senior Sergeant Dow, Detectivo Sergeant Cassells, Constable M'Kclvcy, Constable Bissett, Constable O'Connor, Constablo Wilson, and Constable Dunn. Visits were paid to No. 9 Haining Street, whore Ah Wong was arrested; No. 39 Haining Street, where Ah Yung ■was arrested; and No. 131 A Tarannki Street (at tho corner of Frederick Street), where Wong Joe was arrested. At all threo Louses, it is stated, tho polico seized a quantity of paraphernalia, which it is alleged is used in connestion with pakapoo playing, and as a result tho threo Chinese will bo charged .with keoping common gaming houses. 'Another Chinsse, At Lum, who, it was alleged, was discovered with several pakapoo results in his possession, was arrested on a charge of assisting in tho management of a gaming house, wliilo a European, Samuel Anderson, was arrested on a charge of being found in a common gaming house*

AVhcn. tlip police wore seen to be raiding the houses, a crowd collected in the vicinity, aiid as the Chineso, arrested in No. 181 A Tarcmaki Street, was brought into the open some hooting took place. This did not last long, as the arrested men were removed to Mount Cook police station in. conveyances. They will appear before the magistrate this, morning. From inquiries mado last night it was learned that nono of the men had jp'ado' application-for bail.
