FIRE IN NEW YORK SLUM TENEMENT. By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright Now York, January 1. Five men and threo women died as the result of a fire in a tenement house in the crowded East Side district. Four jumped from fire-escapes and were seriously injured. Fifteen others wore hurt. The fire started on the ground floor, cutting off escapo by way of tho stairs. The inmates crowded 011 to tho firc-os-capes. Some leaped into_ the street, and were killed; others awaited the firemen's arrival, while others, again, escaped over the neighbouring house roofs.
